More about Kilimanjaro National Park Discover Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing 1,688 km² around Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 m, delivers a “world in one mountain” trek from equatorial rainforest to arctic summit. Located 300 km south of the equator and 50 km from Arusha, the park protects Mount Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones—Shira (extinct), Mawenzi (dormant), and Kibo (dormant with fumaroles). Vegetation belts ascend in perfect succession: cultivated foothills (800–1,800 m) give way to dense montane rainforest (1,800–2,800 m) dripping with moss and giant heather; heath and moorland (2,800–4,000 m) feature lobelia decks and everlasting flowers; alpine desert (4,000–5,000 m) hosts hardy lichens; and the glacial summit zone (above 5,000 m) holds permanent ice fields shrinking due to climate change. Weather on Kilimanjaro varies by altitude and season: climbers target the dry windows of January–February and June–October for 20–25°C (68–77°F) at base and –10°C (14°F) at the summit with minimal precipitation. Short rains (November–December) bring afternoon showers below 3,000 m, while the long wet season (March–May) delivers heavy cloud and snow above 4,000 m, often closing routes. Night temperatures plummet year-round, demanding layered clothing and summit gloves. Geologically, Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano formed 750,000 years ago through rift-related eruptions; Kibo’s Reusch Crater still emits sulfurous gases from inner vents, and the Ash Pit reveals 400 m of layered lava. Glaciers like Rebmann and Furtwängler calve dramatically, while radial valleys (barrancos) carved by ancient lava flows guide trekking routes. Seismic monitoring confirms minor activity, but no eruptions since 360,000 years ago. Wildlife adapts to altitude: blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and olive baboons forage in the rainforest alongside bushbabies and tree hyrax. Higher up, eland, Abbott’s duiker, and four-striped mice appear in moorland, with white-necked ravens and alpine chats circling the summit. No large predators roam the upper zones, enabling safe hiking. Over 180 bird species reside across zones. Rainforest hosts silvery-cheeked hornbills, tropical boubou, and Hartlaub’s turaco; moorland shelters scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds and hunter’s cisticola. Raptors include bearded vultures and Verreaux’s eagles. Migratory Palearctic species—Eurasian bee-eaters, willow warblers, and lesser kestrels—pass November–April, using lower slopes as stopover fuel.

More about this tour

Location Overview
This rewarding 6-day Lemosho-Shira Route Kilimanjaro climb ascends the breathtaking western flanks of Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing volcanic peak – situated 80–120 km (50–75 miles) southeast of Arusha, Tanzania’s leading adventure and safari hub, nestled at the base of Mount Meru. Starting from Arusha (1,400 m/4,600 ft elevation), the route follows paved highways through vibrant coffee estates and Chagga villages, then shifts to rugged 4×4 tracks to the secluded Londorossi Gate and Lemosho trailhead, delivering one of the most picturesque and less-crowded approaches to the 5,895 m (19,341 ft) Uhuru Peak.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park (1,688 km²): A UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting the entire mountain above 1,800 m (5,900 ft). The Lemosho-Shira Route starts in pristine western montane rainforest, crosses the expansive Shira Plateau – a dramatic ancient caldera – before joining the southern circuit through moorland, alpine desert, and glacial summit terrain.

Geography & Access
Terrain: Varied ecological zones including dense rainforest with giant ferns, open heather moorland, barren alpine desert with giant groundsels, and arctic scree slopes capped by remnant glaciers.
Altitude Range: 1,800–5,895 m (5,900–19,341 ft).
Travel Times (from Arusha): 3–4 hours by private 4×4 to Londorossi Gate and Lemosho starting point.
Gateway: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) → Arusha (45–60 min transfer), providing seamless access to the climb.
Year-round climbing is possible; prime dry seasons (January–March and June–October) feature clear skies, stable trails, and optimal summit visibility, while wet seasons (April–May long rains, November short rains) offer lush lower forests, vibrant wildflowers, fewer climbers, but increased chances of mud on rainforest sections and clouds at higher elevations.

Seasonal Highlights – What to Expect Year-Round

  • January – March (warm dry season): Mild conditions, clear summit panoramas, minimal crowds; stable trails enhance the Shira Plateau's vastness.
  • April – May (long rains): Lush plateau blooms, stronger streams, muddy steeps; fewer climbers offer intimacy, prepare for rain.
  • June – October (cool dry season): Dry paths, peak success with crisp visibility, great photos; busier but ideal for Lemosho-Shira's exposure.
  • November – December (short rains): Quick showers green the landscape, moderate visitors; warmer climbs with occasional clouds – solid for value.

Optional Add-On Activities (book in advance)

  • Extra acclimatization day on Shira Plateau (extends to 7 days for better odds)
  • Private portable toilet or hot showers
  • Supplemental oxygen or altitude chamber
  • Pre/post-climb like coffee tours or hot springs
