Location Overview
This classic 5-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb with hut accommodations ascends the southeastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest free-standing volcano – located 80–100 km (50–62 miles) southeast of Arusha, Tanzania's vibrant safari and trekking hub at the base of Mount Meru. Starting from Arusha (1,400 m/4,600 ft elevation), the drive follows smooth paved roads through fertile Chagga farmlands, coffee and banana plantations, and bustling Marangu village to the iconic Marangu Gate, providing the most accessible and popular approach to the 5,895 m (19,341 ft) Uhuru Peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park (1,688 km²): A UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting the entire mountain above 1,800 m (5,900 ft). The Marangu Route – nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route" – features dormitory-style huts at Mandara (2,700 m), Horombo (3,720 m), and Kibo (4,703 m), traversing lush rainforest, open moorlands, and stark alpine desert.
Geography & Access
Terrain: Diverse vertical ecosystems including dense montane rainforest, heather moorland with giant groundsels, barren alpine desert saddle, and glacial summit zone.
Altitude Range: 1,860–5,895 m (6,100–19,341 ft).
Travel Times (from Arusha): 2–2.5 hours by private vehicle to Marangu Gate via Moshi.
Gateway: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) → Arusha (45–60 min transfer), with seamless onward access to the mountain.
Year-round climbing with huts providing shelter; dry seasons (January–March and June–October) offer clear views, stable paths, and higher success rates, while rainy seasons (April–May long rains, November short rains) feature lush greenery, fewer crowds, blooming trails, but potential slippery conditions in lower forest zones.

- June – October (cool dry season): Crisp weather, highest success rates with dry conditions, excellent photography opportunities; peak season with cooler nights and more trekkers.
