As you ascend, the trail enters dense montane forest, rich with birdlife and towering trees. The hike is steady but manageable, gradually gaining elevation.

You arrive at Miriakamba Hut, nestled in the forest with scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere, where your team prepares a warm meal and you rest for the night.

More about Arusha National Park Discover Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park, a compact 137 kmΒ² gem just 30 km northeast of Arusha city, serves as Tanzania’s perfect safari starter with Mount Meru’s 4,566 m volcanic cone dominating the skyline. This multi-habitat park transitions from montane rainforest on Meru’s lower slopesβ€”lush with giant ferns, strangler figs, and rosewood treesβ€”to open savannah grasslands, alkaline Momella Lakes, and the dramatic Ngurdoto Crater. Vegetation zones include heathland at higher elevations, acacia woodlands on the plains, and swampy meadows around the lakes, creating intimate wildlife encounters in a single day. Weather mirrors Arusha’s mild highland climate: June–October dry season offers crisp 20–25Β°C (68–77Β°F) days and 10–15Β°C (50–59Β°F) nights, ideal for hiking Meru’s trails. Short rains (November–December) bring afternoon showers and blooming wildflowers, while the long wet season (March–May) turns paths muddy with 18–23Β°C (64–73Β°F) temperatures. January–February provides warm, clear conditions for canoeing on the lakes. Geologically, the park straddles the active East African Rift, where Meru’s parasitic cone last erupted in 1910, leaving ash layers and lava flows that enrich soils. The 3 km-wide Ngurdoto Craterβ€”a β€œmini-Ngorongoro”—formed from explosive volcanism, while seven soda lakes (Momella) owe their turquoise hues to algal blooms fed by rift-fault springs. Hot fumaroles still steam on Meru’s crater floor, hinting at ongoing activity. Wildlife focuses on variety over volume: black-and-white colobus monkeys swing through the canopy alongside blue monkeys, while giraffes, buffalo, and zebras graze the plains. Elephants and hippos inhabit the lakes, with elusive leopards in the forest and warthogs rooting in meadows. No lions or rhinos ensure safe walking safaris and canoe trips. Over 400 bird species make Arusha a birder’s delight. Resident flamingos tint Momella Lakes pink, joined by African fish eagles, augur buzzards, and the dazzling Hartlaub’s turaco in montane forests. Grassland specials include red-fronted parrots and pangani longclaws. Migratory visitors arrive from November–April, with Eurasian bee-eaters, willow warblers, and pallid harriers pausing en route, turning lake shores into a seasonal avian hotspot.

More about this tour

Location Overview

This 3-day Mount Meru trek climbs Tanzania's second-highest peak (4,566m). The mountain sits inside Arusha National Park, about 25 km northeast of Arusha town.

Meru is often overshadowed by nearby Kilimanjaro. Yet it offers a quieter, wildlife-rich climb with dramatic volcanic scenery and spectacular summit views.

The journey starts with a short drive from Arusha to Momella Gate, the park's main entrance. An armed ranger joins your group because wildlife roams freely on the lower slopes. From there, the trail climbs through grassland, forest and moorland to the crater rim and Socialist Peak.

Momella Gate and Forest Zone (1,500–2,500m)

The trek begins in open savannah and montane forest. You'll often see giraffes, buffalo, warthogs and colobus monkeys. The trail is clear and climbs gently, passing waterfalls and rich birdlife.

Miriakamba to Saddle Hut: Moorland Zone (2,500–3,500m)

Higher up, the forest thins into heath and moorland. Giant heathers and lobelias line a steeper trail, with wide views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. Saddle Hut sits below Meru's ridges and is your base for acclimatization and the summit push.

Crater Rim and Summit Zone (3,500–4,566m)

The final ascent follows a narrow, exposed ridge along the crater rim. At sunrise, you look down into the crater and across to Kilimanjaro. The climb to Socialist Peak is steep and demanding but non-technical, so no ropes or climbing skills are needed.

Geography and Access

  • Terrain: savannah, montane forest, heath, moorland and alpine ridge. Meru combines a walking safari with a true high-altitude trek.
  • Altitude range: 1,500–4,566m (4,900–14,980 ft), excellent preparation for Kilimanjaro.
  • Travel time from Arusha: 1–2 hours to Momella Gate, and the same back.
  • Nearest airport: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), about 45–60 minutes from Arusha.

When to Climb

Mount Meru can be climbed all year. The dry seasons, June–October and January–February, offer the clearest views and firmest trails. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (November–December) bring lush scenery and fewer climbers, but wetter, more slippery paths.

How to Plan Your 3-Day Mount Meru Climb

Preparing well is the key to safely reaching Socialist Peak (4,566m). Our Arusha-based guides combine years of mountain experience with proven pacing and acclimatization strategies, so you can enjoy one of Tanzania's most scenic and wildlife-rich climbs.

Why Choose the Mount Meru Trek

  • A true walking safari, with giraffes, buffalo and colobus monkeys along the trail
  • Spectacular views of Kilimanjaro from the summit ridge
  • Diverse landscapes, from rainforest to alpine desert
  • Far fewer climbers than Kilimanjaro
  • Comfortable hut accommodation and an armed ranger escort

Best Time to Climb Mount Meru

Mount Meru can be climbed all year, but conditions vary by season:

  • June–October (dry season): the best trekking conditions, with clear views and cool temperatures
  • January–February: warm days and excellent summit visibility
  • March–May (long rains): muddy trails and limited views. We recommend avoiding April and May.
  • November–December (short rains): lush green forest and fewer hikers

Summit night is cold and windy in every season, so pack warm layers.

Tips from Our Mountain Guides

  • Walk slowly ("pole pole") to help your body adjust to altitude
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the trek
  • Take the optional Little Meru acclimatization hike on Day 2
  • Follow your guide's pacing and safety instructions
  • Rest well before the midnight summit start

How to Prepare Physically and Mentally

  • Physical training: regular hikes with elevation gain, cardio such as running, cycling or stair climbing, and leg strength exercises
  • Mental preparation: expect a midnight start and a long final day of 10–12 hours
  • Gear essentials: layered clothing, well broken-in hiking boots, and warm clothing for summit night
